INTRODUCTION

Parys has rightly been termed the “Garden of the Free State “, and for beauty, productiveness of soil, river amusements, and natural picturesqueness it can truly be said that this place has no equal in the interior of the Sub-Continent, and the town has now firmly established itself as the premium inland pleasure resort on South Africa.

Situated as it is amongs lovely surroundings, encircled hy picturesque mountains and bounded by running streams, there is provided every kind of outdoor amusement and recreation, and it thus forms an ideal resort for Rand holiday seekers.

As a week-end and holiday resort Parys will appeal to most people, as it is situated within five hours by rail of Johannesburg and the train service has recently been considerably accelerated. Those who can afford the luxury of a motor-car, can reach Parys on less than four hours, the road being fair: petrol can be purchased in the town, at Johannesburg prices, and minor repairs to cars are carried out at very reasonable rates.

Just as Durban and other coastal towns have been steadily growing in favour as seaside resorts, so has Parys become increasingly popular with Rand residents, within the last few months.

The town has a progressive municipal council, and has recently installed an electric lighting scheme. It has the unique advantage of being both a summer and winter resort, as while having a temperate climate in summer due to the abundance of shade and quantity of running water, it is also much sought after as a winter retreat which is due to the town being so admirably protected by a range of hills, from the cold southerly winds.

Visitors from the Rand also appreciate the lower altitude, Parys being over 1000 feet below Johannesburg.

A dining-car is attached to all passenger trains, and visitors can therefore travel with the maximum degree of comfort.

Excursions are run every Saturday from Johannesburg at the cheap rate of eleven shillings (1 1 s.) first class return.

To connect with Parys, visitors should entrain at Park by the 2.10 p.m. om Saturdays or other weekdays, arriving at Parys at 7.30 the same evening, on time for dinner.

The return journey can be made on Sunday night at 20 p.m., arriving at Park early Monday morning; or at 2.15 p.m. Monday and other afternoons from Parys, arriving at Park at 7.48 the same evening.
