One Mile. One Street. All heart.
Your Guide to the Parys Crater Street Mile 2026
On 10 October 2026, the streets of Parys will come alive with runners, families, businesses and supporters for one of the town’s much-loved sporting events, the Parys Crater Street Mile.
At 1.6 km, it may only be a mile, but this event brings together competitive athletics, community spirit and the opportunity to experience Parys from a different perspective. Organised by the Rotary Club of Parys in partnership with Parys Multisport, the event also supports Rotary’s community initiatives, giving the race a purpose that extends beyond the finish line.
Whether you are an experienced athlete, a young runner, a casual participant or simply coming along to support someone, here is what you need to know about the Parys Crater Street Mile 2026.
A Race for More Than One Type of Runner
One of the things that makes the Parys Crater Street Mile stand out is the range of participants it welcomes.
The 2026 programme includes everything from the Rotarians & Friends for Polio Fun Run/Walk and Business Fun Run/Walk to junior categories, Masters, Seniors and Elite athletes.
Young runners can take part in the Rising Stars 800 m for ages 7 to 9, followed by the 1-mile categories for ages 10 to 13, 14 to 17 and 18 to 19.
There are also races for Masters aged 35 and older, Seniors aged 20 to 34, and Elite Women and Elite Men, including invited athletes.
With medals for all finishers, the event offers an opportunity for people at different stages of their running journey to be part of the same event.
A Recognised Athletics Event in Parys
While the Crater Street Mile has a strong community focus, it is also a serious athletics event.
The Parys Crater Street Mile is World Athletics Certified and serves as an ASA Free State Qualifier. The 1.6 km street race features 10 race categories, bringing competitive running to the heart of Parys.
For athletes, this makes the event an important date on the calendar. For spectators and visitors, it is an opportunity to experience high-level athletics alongside the energy of a community event.
What Happens on Race Day?
The first races get underway from 07:15, with the programme continuing throughout the morning.
The day begins with the Rotarians & Friends for Polio Fun Run/Walk at 07:15, followed by the Business Fun Run/Walk at 07:45.
The Rising Stars 800 m takes place at 08:00, followed by the junior mile categories. The Masters race starts at 09:00, Seniors at 09:15, Elite Women at 09:30 and Elite Men at 09:45.
If you are not running, arriving early means you can experience more of the event and support participants across the different categories.
Getting Ready for the Parys Crater Street Mile
If you are participating, remember that number collection takes place on Friday, 9 October from 10:00 to 18:00 at Parys Info & Tourism at 85 Bree Street.
Race-morning number collection will also be available from 05:00.
With the first event starting shortly after 07:00, planning ahead is worthwhile. Give yourself enough time to collect your number if needed, get settled and make your way to the start.
For anyone travelling to Parys for the race, staying overnight also means you can arrive rested and enjoy more of the town before and after the event.
Make a Weekend of Your Visit to Parys
The Crater Street Mile may be the reason you come to Parys, but it does not have to be the only thing you do.
Once the running is over, take some time to discover the town. Enjoy breakfast or lunch at a local restaurant, browse the shops and galleries, explore the creative side of Parys or spend some time beside the Vaal River.
October is also a great time to enjoy the outdoors, with activities and attractions in and around Parys offering plenty of options for visitors who want to extend their stay.
And, of course, Parys is situated within the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site, giving visitors another reason to explore the landscape and experiences surrounding the town.
For those travelling from further afield, the race can easily become part of a weekend getaway rather than a single morning’s activity.
More Than a Mile
What makes the Parys Crater Street Mile special is not simply the distance covered. It is the people who come together around it.
From children taking part in their first race to experienced athletes competing at a high level, from businesses entering teams to families cheering from the roadside, the event creates a shared experience in the streets of Parys.
It is also a reminder of how sporting events can contribute to a town beyond the day itself, bringing visitors into Parys, supporting local businesses and helping community initiatives make a difference.
Whether you are entering the race, supporting a runner or looking for a reason to visit Parys in October, put 10 October 2026 on your calendar.
Come for the mile. Stay for Parys.
