The Crater Camino: A Five-Day Walking Journey Through the Vredefort Dome

There are journeys that take you somewhere new, and then there are journeys that change the way you see the world around you. The Crater Camino is one of those rare experiences. Set within the remarkable landscapes of the Vredefort Dome near Parys, this five-day slackpacking adventure invites hikers to explore one of South Africa’s most extraordinary natural environments step by step.

Stretching roughly 80 kilometres across ancient terrain, the Crater Camino leads through bushveld trails, river valleys, historic sites and dramatic viewpoints that reveal the geological story of the world’s oldest and largest visible meteorite impact structure.

Each day brings a different atmosphere, allowing participants to experience the Dome from many perspectives.

Day 1: Stonehenge River Lodge to Wild Olive Guest Farm
The journey begins near the Stonehenge River Lodge area where the Vaal River curves gently through the landscape. After a welcoming briefing and the excitement of gathering with fellow hikers, the first steps of the Crater Camino lead into a relaxed riverside environment.

Early along the route walkers encounter at the quarry the exposed rock formations that reveals part of the incredible story of the meteorite impact that shaped the Vredefort Dome nearly two billion years ago.

The trail continues along farm roads and peaceful riverside paths where the Vaal River appears frequently beside the route. The calm water and surrounding vegetation create a tranquil atmosphere that eases walkers into the rhythm of the journey.
The day ends at Wild Olive Guest Farm, home to the largest wild olive forest in South Africa. Walking beneath the cool canopy of these ancient trees feels like entering a hidden sanctuary. The evening concludes with a sunset stroll through the forest to a lookout deck overlooking the valley.

Day 2: Wild Olive Guest Farm to Paradyskloof
The second day introduces hikers to the rolling bushveld landscapes that define much of the Vredefort Dome. The terrain moves gently through koppies and open valleys where expansive views stretch across the surrounding ridges.

History becomes part of the journey as the route passes Anglo-Boer War trenches. These quiet historical features offer a powerful reminder of the region’s past.

Another memorable stop is a charming miniature church that appears almost unexpectedly along the trail. Its peaceful setting provides the perfect place to pause and take in the surroundings.

The final stretch leads into the tranquil valley of Paradyskloof, where the quiet atmosphere and surrounding ridges create an ideal place to rest after another rewarding day of walking.

Day 3: Paradyskloof to Sunnyside
Day three introduces one of the most exciting choices along the Crater Camino. The morning walk leads toward Venterskroon, a historic settlement nestled within the Vredefort Dome.

Here walkers enjoy a welcoming breakfast stop before deciding how they would like to continue the day’s adventure.

One option follows the traditional walking route through scenic valleys and farm roads that showcase the natural beauty of the Dome. The other option offers a completely different perspective of the landscape through a rowing experience along the Vaal River.

Gliding across the calm water reveals a peaceful side of the Dome where reeds line the riverbanks and birdlife thrives in the riverine ecosystem.

Both routes eventually lead to Sunnyside, a comfortable riverside retreat where hikers can relax and enjoy the evening after a memorable day.

Day 4: Sunnyside to Thwane Bush Camp
The fourth day brings the most rugged terrain of the journey. The trail climbs steadily through bushveld vegetation and rocky paths as walkers move deeper into the ancient structure of the crater.

These climbs reward participants with some of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the Vredefort Dome. From these elevated ridges the patterns of the crater landscape become visible across the horizon.

Standing here offers a powerful sense of the geological forces that shaped this extraordinary region.

The day ends at Thwane Bush Camp where the quiet bushveld environment provides a peaceful setting for the final evening of the Camino.

Day 5: Thwane Bush Camp to Hadeda Creek
The final day begins with soft morning light across open plains and gentle bushveld valleys. The terrain feels relaxed and reflective.
As the trail unfolds, the landscape gradually guides walkers back toward the Vaal River. Trees become denser and the sound of water grows stronger as the destination approaches.

Eventually the journey ends at Hadeda Creek, where you can overlook the river and hikers celebrate the completion of their five-day adventure.
With dusty boots and full hearts, participants finish the Crater Camino with a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for the remarkable landscapes of the Vredefort Dome.
