Parys will celebrate a historic milestone in 2026 as the town reaches 150 years of stories, people, and community spirit. Parys 150 is not simply a celebratory moment. It is a year-long showcase of heritage, culture, adventure, creativity, business development, and unity. The Sesquicentennial invites residents, visitors, and local organisations to join hands and help shape a memorable chapter that will reflect everything that makes Parys extraordinary.
The celebrations aim to highlight all that Parys has to offer. Visitors will be invited to explore the natural attractions of the region, especially the iconic Vaal River, along with the town’s vibrant business landscape and creative hubs. Parys is known for its unique mix of art galleries, boutique stores, adventure activities, and natural beauty. Parys 150 will amplify these strengths to attract tourism, encourage investment, and inspire collaboration between businesses, artists, community groups, and residents.
A full programme of diverse event themes will form the backbone of the Sesquicentennial. Adventure activities will be a core focus, with the Vaal River taking centre stage through water-based recreation, guided river routes, and tourism partnerships. Hiking, mountain biking, nature walks, and the launch of the Crater Camino will offer visitors an entirely new way to experience the region. Local entrepreneurs and businesses are encouraged to participate and shine at expos, networking sessions, agricultural innovation events, and training workshops designed to spark economic growth.
Community involvement will shape much of the festive atmosphere. Street festivals, parade, neighbourhood projects, educational programmes, community picnics, and outdoor movie evenings will invite residents of all ages to participate. Culinary enthusiasts can look forward to food fairs, tasting sessions, cooking demonstrations, and competitions that celebrate both traditional and contemporary local cuisine.
Heritage will also be a key part of the celebration. Exhibitions, storytelling gatherings, historical tours and musical interludes will form part of the celebrations. The visual and performing arts will add colour and expression throughout the year, showcasing local talent through art exhibitions, murals, open studios, craft markets, theatre, dance, music, and poetry.
Eco tourism activities like wetland tours, birdwatching, guided hikes, and conservation projects will highlight the area’s natural wonders.
To ensure the community stays connected to every event, the Living Calendar at www.parysinfoandtourism.co.za will keep all listings current throughout the year. A dedicated coordinator at the Parys Info and Tourism office will update the calendar regularly. Event organisers can register their activities online or by visiting the office at 85 Bree Street, Parys, Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:30. Additional support is available through 056 811 4000 or email info@parysinfoandtourism.co.za.
The Sesquicentennial is an opportunity to celebrate the past but also to shape the future. The success of Parys 150 relies on the involvement of the entire community. Residents can offer their gardens or pavements for creative events. Farmers can host open days or agri tours. Businesses can create themed promotions, sponsor activities, or help decorate the town with all types of lights, flags and banners. Artists, performers, and creators are encouraged to lead workshops, paint murals, stage productions, or display their work. Together, these contributions will create a celebration that honours the soul of Parys.
Parys 150 is an invitation to reflect, participate, celebrate, and dream. As we step into the next 150 years, the Sesquicentennial aims to strengthen the town’s profile, deepen community bonds, and inspire pride in the place we call home.
